Container Shelters NZ
Heavy-Duty Storage & Workspace Solutions
Looking for a durable, cost-effective shelter for your site, farm or yard? Shelter Station supplies a proven range of heavy-duty container shelters designed for New Zealand conditions. These engineered steel-frame structures mount onto standard 20ft and 40ft shipping containers to create a large, weather-protected storage or workspace area without the cost and complexity of constructing a conventional building.
With over 15 years of industry experience, Shelter Station supplies container shelters to contractors, farmers, fleet operators and property owners across New Zealand.
What Is a Container Shelter?
A container shelter, also known as a container dome or shipping container shelter, is a steel-frame and PVC structure designed to mount onto standard shipping containers. The containers provide the base and support structure, while the arched steel frame and heavy-duty PVC cover span the space between them to create a large, weather-protected storage or workspace area.
Container shelters require no conventional building foundations and can provide a flexible, cost-effective alternative to constructing a permanent building for machinery storage, vehicle protection, workshops, bulk storage and industrial applications.
Available Sizes & Spans
Shelter Station’s container shelter range spans from compact single-container options up to wide-span industrial domes suited to the largest equipment. All sizes are designed to fit standard ISO shipping containers (20ft or 40ft).
Choosing the right container shelter depends on the equipment or materials you need to protect, the available space on your site and the container configuration you plan to use. Shelter Station offers a range of spans and profiles to suit everything from compact storage and workshops through to large-scale machinery and industrial applications.

Frame Construction & Cover Materials
Every Shelter Station container shelter is built to perform in New Zealand’s variable climate — from the subtropical north to the high-wind south.
Galvanised Steel Frames: All frames are manufactured from heavy-gauge galvanised steel tubing, with hot-dip galvanised base rails and plates. Galvanising provides strong corrosion resistance, making the frames well suited to coastal, agricultural and industrial environments. Frame tube sizing varies by model, with individual specifications available on each product page.
610gsm PVC Covers: Our container shelter covers use heavy-duty 610gsm, UV-stabilised, rip-stop PVC fabric designed for demanding outdoor applications. The covers are waterproof and UV-resistant, providing durable protection from New Zealand’s sun, wind and rain. Replacement covers are also available if a cover is damaged or reaches the end of its service life.
Wind & Engineering Considerations
Wind performance depends on the shelter model, site exposure, container stability, anchoring and correct cover tension. Shelter Station can provide available engineering information for the relevant model to help assess suitability for your site. For exposed or high-wind locations, we recommend discussing the proposed shelter configuration and site conditions with us before installation.
Building Consent Considerations
Whether a container shelter requires building consent in New Zealand depends on factors including its size, design, location, intended use and installation. Some building work may qualify for an exemption under the Building Act 2004, but exemptions are subject to specific conditions and should not be assumed to apply to every container shelter installation.
Before installation, we recommend confirming the requirements for your proposed shelter with your local council. Resource consent, district-plan requirements or site-specific engineering requirements may also apply separately.
If you are unsure where to start, contact Shelter Station with your proposed shelter size and site location. We can provide the relevant product information and available engineering documentation to help with your planning.
Warranty & After-Sales Support
Our container shelter range is backed by a 10-year structural warranty and 5-year fabric cover warranty, subject to the applicable warranty terms.
Both warranties operate on a straight-line diminishing-value basis. Installation and maintenance requirements must be followed to maintain warranty coverage. See our Warranty page for the full terms and conditions.
Beyond the warranty, we stock a comprehensive range of spare parts and replacement covers, so you’re never left without support if accidental damage occurs or covers need replacing after years of use.
Professional Installation Across New Zealand
Not comfortable assembling your shelter yourself? Our experienced installation team can travel to sites throughout New Zealand, including rural and remote locations. Most container shelter models can typically be installed within a day when the site and containers are prepared and ready for installation, while larger Thunderdome models may require additional time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Container shelter pricing varies depending on the span, length, frame design, cover specification, optional end walls and whether installation is required. Contact Shelter Station with the size of the area you need to cover and your site location, and we’ll recommend suitable options and provide a quote.
Start with the width, height and length of the equipment, vehicles or materials you need to protect, then allow additional clearance for access and day-to-day use. Smaller 6m and 8m shelters suit compact storage and vehicle applications, while 10m, 12m and larger Thunderdome models provide greater clearance and covered working space.
A 6m shelter is suited to more compact storage and workshop requirements. An 8m shelter provides additional width for vehicles and farm equipment, while a 10m shelter creates substantially more covered space for larger machinery, bulk storage and commercial applications. If you’re unsure, send us your required dimensions, and we can recommend the most suitable model.
Yes. Container shelters are designed to use shipping containers as the supporting base structure, creating a covered area between them. The required container layout depends on the shelter model and site, so confirm your proposed configuration with Shelter Station before preparing the containers.
Service life depends on the site conditions, installation, cover tension and ongoing maintenance. Shelter Station’s container shelter range is backed by a 10-year structural warranty on the galvanised steel frame and a 5-year warranty on the 610gsm PVC cover, subject to the applicable warranty terms.
Shelter Station container shelters use heavy-duty 610gsm PVC covers. The fabric is UV-stabilised, rip-stop and waterproof, providing durable protection for equipment, vehicles and materials in outdoor environments.
A container shelter uses shipping containers as its supporting base with a steel-frame PVC roof spanning the covered area. It can provide a faster and more flexible way to create covered storage or workspace than constructing a conventional shed. A pole shed is a more permanent building solution and may be preferable where a fully enclosed, fixed structure is required.
Building consent requirements depend on the shelter’s size, design, location, intended use and installation. Some building work may qualify for an exemption, but this should be confirmed for the specific project. We recommend checking with your local council before installation. Resource consent or district-plan requirements may also apply separately.
Suitability depends on the shelter model, site exposure, container stability, anchoring and installation. If your site is exposed to high winds, contact Shelter Station before ordering so we can discuss the appropriate model and available engineering information for your location.
Yes. Shelter Station offers professional installation throughout New Zealand, including rural and remote locations. Ask for installation to be included when requesting your quote.
